The challenge

Qurna sits at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates, and its soil differs fundamentally from that of central Basra. Foundations that work elsewhere do not work here — and a foundation design error doesn't show at handover, it shows years later.

The approach

  • Foundations were designed for the area's specific soil conditions, not copied from another project's foundation detail.

  • The reinforced concrete skeletons were executed in partnership with Chinese firms to approved engineering standards.

  • The architectural design followed modern educational standards, serving how the school is actually used rather than only how it looks.

The outcome

All three schools were handed over in 2023, ready for use — an investment in the future of Qurna's next generation.
